Historic Vertical: 30 Years of Domus Aurea with Matthew Luczy

Thirty years after the inaugural 1996 vintage, I had the privilege of conducting a remarkable vertical tasting of Domus Aurea, alongside The Wine Advocate.
More than a tasting, this was a reading of time — an exploration of how a place, a vineyard, and a vision evolve across decades.
From the beginning, Domus Aurea has been deeply rooted in its terroir in Peñalolén. Planted in the 1970s from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux massal selections, grown on their own roots, and set on well-drained colluvial soils at the foothills of the Andes, the vineyard has consistently shaped the identity of the wine.
Spanning nearly three decades, the vertical clearly revealed the tension between continuity and variation.
The older vintages, starting with 1996, demonstrated a remarkable capacity to age with precision and balance. Tertiary aromas of fine tobacco, cedar, and dried herbs have developed while preserving freshness and structural integrity.
The mid-aged vintages reflected the gradual refinement of winemaking decisions — more precise extractions, more controlled élevage — always in service of the vineyard.
The most recent vintages showed an even clearer expression of place: greater energy, sharper definition of fruit, and a more transparent reading of both soil and climate.
What stands out most, beyond vintage variation, is the stylistic coherence. A consistent signature defined by balance, tension, and a deliberate intention to let the terroir speak without artifice.
This tasting also offered perspective on climatic evolution over time, and on how the vineyard — through its plant material and careful management — has adapted without losing its identity.
Sharing this vertical with Matthew Luczy was particularly meaningful. His focus on precision and terroir expression brought an external, rigorous perspective to this 30-year journey.
Beyond the tasting itself, this moment marks a milestone. It confirms that Domus Aurea is not simply the expression of a vintage, but of a place that endures through time.
A historic vertical — not only for its breadth, but for what it reveals: the ability of a vineyard to write a coherent story, year after year.
